A white Tryfan

[caption id="attachment_115" align="aligncenter" width="1024" caption="Sunrise over Capel Curig"]Sunrise over Capel Curig[/caption]

I woke around 5.30am for breakfast and the usual morning routine, anyone who knows ulcerative colitis will know what that consists of. Anyway, I had breakfast with what looked like cloud covering the surrounding mountain tops, great I thought, a distinct lack of view. As the sun started to rise it appeared we had a sprinkling of the white stuff on the higher ground, this made the day a little more interesting.

[caption id="attachment_114" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Pen Yr Ole Wen"][/caption]

After a few photos of the valley, sunrise and white topped mountains we headed of to the layby, one of the first to arrive at the base of Tryfan that day, Very doubtful to be the first to the summit though.

We didn't exactly have a planned route up to the top, just whatever looked interesting and took our fancy. This proved to be a good plan, and tested my confidence and climbing abilities(virtually non existent) to the limit. I swear there were a couple of moments where I was close to taking the quick (unintentional) route down the mountain.

[caption id="attachment_124" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Looking North form halfway point."][/caption]

The snow and ice made the going pretty tough in places but alot of fun too. We seemed to hit a band of cloud three quarters of the way up but once on top the view was, again, fantastic. Clear blue skies greeted us, temperature was ok but a jumping Adam and Eve was out of the question, just a tad icey on top would of made for an interesting landing.

[caption id="attachment_125" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="No leaping today, way to icy on top!"][/caption]

After a short stop and chat to other folks lucky enough to enjoy the summit that day we headed over Far South Peak of Tryfan and worked our way down the valley passed Llyn Bochlwyd passing some stunning waterfalls and features on the way down. Once back at the van it was a quick change out of the soggy cold clothes, make a fresh cuppa and fill the flask with hot water for the journey home.

Well I enjoyed my first bit of scrambling and climbing in snowy conditions, I've hiked/walked in snowy conditions many a time but this was so much fun.

Lets just say it's the tip of the iceberg, literally.

What a weekend!

Pre op clamber

Snowdon and Tryfan, November 2010.

Chris has joined me on a trip up Snowdonia before the big day.

I picked Chris up at Chiverton around 6pm on the 5th November and we drove on upto Pen-Y-Pas, arriving to a wet and windy carpark around 1230am Saturday morning.

We decided to kip in the van rather than mess around finding a campsite, the front seats of the van proved to be quite comfortable, except for the handbrake. Not to sure how Chris faired in the back of the van though.

We woke around 6am with the weather a great improvement. The plan was to navigate the the Snowdon Horseshoe, however we left the options open to reach Yr Wyddfa and head down if needs be. This proved to be a good idea. The weather was good, couldn't really of asked for better conditions. The sun was out, next to no wind and temperature was good. Shame that my fitness wasn't good!

We made our way up the Pyg Track to Crib junction where we took a right and headed up to Crib Goch. The climb up was fun
I'd forgotten how much I enjoy scrambling and climbing. I had also forgotten what the view was like once on the top.

After a relaxed scramble (crawl) along Crib Goch we decided to end to day with a summit of Snowdon and a wander down the Pyg Track, neither of us wanted to over do it and ruin the climb up Tryfan on Sunday.

We headed down to the van, which I must admit was a very welcome site! I was shattered! We headed over toward Tryfan in search for the campsite, Gwern Gof Isaf Farm. A nice little site very close to Tryfan, hot showers (which were very welcome), bunkhouses and lots of tent space.

After a shower hot food and a beer, with the rain tapping on the tent I finally hit the hay around 9pm.

Catch up time

Looks like I have some catch up to do, I think possibly due to the state of my mind and distinct lack of enthusiasm I haven't posted much for a good few months

The thought of the meds not working and probability of major surgery becoming a reality is kind of, for want of a better word, depressing me.

But must be strong and face facts that I am to part company with my dearly beloved colon, these things happen and I suppose there are worse things in life.

Well, thats enough misery, time to start blogging!

Pembrey-last man standing!

Well, the time has come again to head to Wales, Pembrey Coutry Park to be precise. A full weekend of kite buggy on one of the UKs' best beaches. Miles and miles of golden sand allowing hours and hours of buggy time. Along with the beach and buggy is the great company of my mates, BBQ and a few beers to boot.

The trip up with Timmy was the usual experience, funfilled and entertaining! Travelling up on an evening is never fun, arriving in the dark to put the tent up is never really much fun but necessary to be honest.

The weekend on the beach was it's usual for Pembrey, fan-bloody-tastic! Apart from Monday, my temper tantrum arose again, washed my kite four times in less than half an hour, off with the helmet and up the beach it went, cracking the peak- looks like I need to buy a new one now!

Saturday night BBQ and entertainment was spot on, thanks again to the crew from Carmarthenshire Land Sailing Club ( CLSC ) for providing a great night. Think I finally hit the hay around 4:30am, sadly I missed the whole of Sunday due to a major hangover- last man standing was done, never to be repeated!

Slow downhill slope

Well, the colitis isn't playing ball at the moment.

My Mercaptopurine seems to be slow working, not sure how well this will do the job.

Off to see my IBD nurse Jo Sheppard and consultant Dr Fortun for a wee check up in a week or so, still having the weekly blood tests too.

If things don't improve then the upcoming 3 Peaks Challenge and Everest Base Camp trek may have to be put on hold.

Not a happy bunny!

Scafell Pike

All packed and ready to go.

Looking forward to conquering Scafell Pike, going to be hard going again. I could do with starting my Ferrous Sulphate tablets again, I'm really struggling with the energy levels at the moment. But hey hoo, I'll get there.

Luckily, I have time for a quite kip before I leave woo hoo.

Brecon Beacons then homeward bound!

A short trek today, totally shattered so quite glad it a shorty.

Just up to Corn Du and Pen-y-fan. We started with from the carpark on the A470 and headed upto Corn Du. I admit, after 3 days of climbing Snowdon and Tryfan my legs weren't exactly in the mood for more walking or climbing but determination and stubbornness got me through this.

We then followed the path to Pen-y-fan arriving about 8.40 am, and were welcomed by a fantastic view, definitely worth the trek here.

Getting back to the van was a relief, just had the drive home to contend with now.

Crib Goch or no Crib Goch?

Snowdon again today. The plan is to complete the Snowdon Horseshoe, I think this is going to be fun!

Surprisingly I don't feel bad today, thought I'd ache like hell, but no feel ok and well up for tackling Crib Goch. We left the campsite around 9.30, we were going to grab the bus up to Pen-y-pas but got fed up waiting for it, god knows what time the buses start.

Seeing the Pyg track in broad daylight was a little different to Wednesday morning, I could actually see the mountains, and what a site! Especially in the todays glorious weather. We followed the Pyg track until the junction for Crib Goch and sat there for a quick break before heading on up. We followed a school party up for a few hundred feet then passed them as they took a well earned rest.

Now, this is were it got interesting, especially for someone who isn't so keen on heights or long drops. A couple of the sections on the way up to Crib Goch tested the fear factor, to be honest it needed testing, especially with knowing what was ahead.

The view from up top was captivating. Definitely worth every drop of sweat spilt.
The way across Crib Goch was interesting to say the least, there were certainly times were the thought of turning back were barely beaten back by the urge to conquer the arete and my fear of heights. Once across the knife edge and Crib Goch we had the pinnacle to traverse, again these were quite fun and exhilarating.
With the pinnacles in the bag we headed for Snowdon's summit briefly stopping a Garnedd Ugain trig point for a couple of photos.

With food and drink in our bellies we headed down the scree slope for Y Lliwedd via Bwlch y Saethau, the descent turned out to be quite tricky due only to the amount of scree. Once down we had a fairly easy walk to Y Lliwedd, and once again the summit served up some incredible scenery.

It was all downhill from hear, must admit in a way I was quite glad it was nearly over, the feet were starting to ache now, but it has certainly been worth every step. Entering the car park from the Pyg track was a relief, it just left a downhill drive to the campsite, and sustenance.

Snowdon or bust!

This is it, no turning back now. We left Redruth around 7.30 in the evening to head towards Snowdonia, the plan was to reach Snowdons summit for sunrise, would we make it?

After an uneventful drive up, no kips either, we reached the car park at Pen-y-pas just about 1.30am Wednesday. We planned on having a kip for an hour or 2 before heading up the mountain via the Pyg track. I managed 20 minutes of very unsettled broken sleep, saw a couple walkers coming off the mountain by the Miners track around 3am, good to see there are other crazies out there!

We finally set off around 4am and headed up the Pyg track, I'd like to say the scenery was stunning, but black mountains against a black sky doesn't really give you much to see, I shall have to
wait till tomorrow. The pace seemed quite fast, especially for my 1st mountain, still, it's going to be fast on the challenge! It was nice to get some light to see where we were walking without the aid of a headtorch. Big clumps of white stuff littered the mountain side, there was still snow around, which pleased James, all his previous climbs of Snowdon were snowless.

The top of the Pyg track seemed like a different world, the wind! It was a tad windy and blooming cold with it. We still had a 10 minute walk upto the summit. After over 2 hours off climbing up this thing it was nice to see the end in sight, and even better to see nobody else up there! The few steps upto the trig point were hard work, bloody killers to be honest, but to be up there after the hard walking was very relieving. The wind was blowing a good 50mph+ with the 1-2 degrees temperature forecast we were left with a wind chill of -7/8 degrees. It was nigh on impossible to stay upright let alone have my cuppa by the trig point so after a photo or 2 we headed for shelter beside the cafe.

But we made it up there for sunrise, just!

After spending 20 minutes or so up on the summit, photos, cuppa etc etc we headed back down. We descended via the Miners track this time, even the descent was tiring enough. I must admit, I was glad to see the van again! all this to do again tomorrow, via Crib Goch this time.

Roll on tomorrow!

Off upto Snowdon tomorrow, 11,000ft ascent/climb/scramble over the 4 days.

Watched a few vids of Crib Goch and Tryfan, think I better pack loads of spare clean under kacks.

Shall see how fit I really am! God help me!

Just a week to go

Well, in a weeks time James and I shall be travelling upto Snowdon to spend 3 days going up and down the mountain via the Pyg track on Wednesday, a scramble up along Crib Goch on Thursday, and we're going to go for a wee clamber up Tryfan whilst up there too.

Calling in at the Breacon Beacons on the way home to have a bimble around Pen y Fan and Corn Du area for a day on Saturday.

I must be mad!

I just hope I get rid of my lads Super Bug that he decided to share with me, aren't kids great?

To be honest I'm looking forward to it, going to be hard going but it'll put my fitness to the test.

Elliotts first 'proper expedition'

Well, we're still recovering from camping on Dartmoor, myself and my 6 year old lad (Elliott), never really realised how much mess he can make in such a short space of time.

Still, we had fun, considering the rain overnight. Was nice to wake up at 6 am and see the morning sun and mist.

I was gutted I forgot my camera though!

More drugs anyone?

Hospital visit today, went to see my IBD nurse for a check up.

Well, they've up'd my Mercaptopurine and Prednisilone again. Hopefully they'll start working soon as it doesn't feel like they are at the moment.

Another visit to them in four weeks for another check up. Hopefully it'll be good news by then!

Crap week so far!

Guts aren't being very nice this week.

Not sure if it's the medicine that's not working or sliding of the SCD diet rails.

Roll on hospital appointment tomorrow!

Long day and a hard walk!

Exmoor was the destination today.

Parking near Porlock and walking over to Dunkery Beacon. Well, it looked easy on paper but those hills, they were killers! Very prolonged steep ascents, good practice though, definitely knew my heart was beating after climbing them. Ended up doing a total of 13.6 miles.

The weather was ok, rain came in on the last couple of miles, nothing bad and to be honest the wet stuff was welcome by then, nice and cooling.

As for this evening, started feeling very light headed, I think I over did it a little, awake at 3:00 am and 2.5 hour drive there and back, my colitis was giving me grief too, so I'm tucked up in bed ready for sleep now.

Need sleep!

Desperately need some sleep!

Feeling well shattered after this week and got a full days work too. It has it's good and bad points. At least my jobs are all relatively local.

Col is playing up a little, could be the Prednisilone kicking in, will have to see how it goes today.

Just remembered I have blood test at 9.30, doh! Nearly forgot.

The fun to be had on Bodmin moor.

An interesting walk yesterday, with a little extra mile or so added right at the end.

Waste deep in a bog for someone was punishment enough lol.

Parked up in Rough Tor car park. Headed towards Alex tor we then headed towards King Arthurs Hall via Candra. Had lunch at Garrow tor before heading to Brown Willy and Rough tor, the last one of the day was Showery tor, just a short hop from Rough tor.

This is were the fun started, wild goose chases and needles in haystacks come to mind.

But they were home on the dining room table all the time, the guilty party knows who they are lol

Felt ok all day, not to drained, could of walked further than 11 miles if needed.

Good day though, blue skies, sunshine and not to chilly!

Portreath to Devoran, time to test the legs!

Time to see how fit my legs are.

A planned 22 miler today following the Mineral tramway from Portreath on the North coast to Devoran, touching the water on the South coast of Cornwall.

I manages to damage my ankle within the first half mile, lessoned learnt today- do not walk 21.5 miles on a damaged ankle, the body doesn't like it!

An enjoyable walk, even though it was very tough towards the end but good training for the second day of the 10 Highest Peaks in Scotland (going to be a very tough day that one).

Out with James today. Drive upto Postbridge to follow (well, we were meant too) the East Dart River to Sandy Hole Pass. We walked a total of 11 miles taking in Rough tor, Devils tor, Lydford tor, Longaford and Arch tor then back to Postbridge.

A good trek on a sunny and cold day.

Today was my first wander onto Dartmoor in quite a few years. Thought a nice walk upto Yes tor and High Willhays, taking Black tor, Dinger tor and finishing back at Meldon reservoir. Was a good day out, covered just over 9 miles. Weather was chilly with mist in the morning and a glorious clear afternoon.

Definitely worth the drive up to Meldon.
